And it works great!!
I finally made my own laundry detergent and fabric softener! I got it off of the Duggar's Website and it works wonderfully. There are two kinds of recipes for the detergent, liquid and powder. Since we have space issues, I made the powder. You can find most of this stuff in the laundry isle.
Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent
1 large bar of Ivory soap (there are 2 sizes)
1 cup of washing soda or baking soda (I use baking soda)
1/2 cup of Borax
It is easiest to cut the soap into chunks and put it into a food processor or mini chopper. Then add the soda and borax and give it another go around in the food processor. You can also grate up the bar of soap and mix the other ingredients together.
Small loads: 1 Tablespoon
Large loads: 2 Tablespoons
Large Heavily soiled loads: 2 heaping Tablespoons
Makes 3 cups of detergent (Approx. 40 loads) and costs approx. $2
Inexpensive Fabric Softener
1 Container of fabric softener
4 inexpensive sponges without scrubbing side, cut in half
Pour entire container of fabric softener in a larger container or bucket. Fill empty softener container twice with water (2 parts water to 1 part softener). Add sponges to softener/water mixture. When ready to use, wring out 1-3 sponges(depending on load size) and add to the dryer as you would a dryer sheet. This recipe will probably last me at least 6 months, I will let you know when I run out.
You may have to tweak it as you deem necessary, like add more soap to the load, more sponges to the dryer, or not wring out the sponges as much. The clothes will not come out smelling like perfume, they will come out smelling clean!
If you are interested in making the liquid soap, it's on the Duggar's website here.

And I've been all over the Duggar website now that you've made me aware of it. Why can't I run my household of four as efficiently as her household of 20??
You would have enjoyed the Moms' group meeting we had a couple months ago...we had a guest speaker come in and teach us how to make everything from detergent to surface cleanser to boo-boo medicine.
That's great! I've switched over to homemade cleaning products for the most part, but I've never made the leap to do the detergent thing. I'm inspired (and I'm out of detergent in a few days). I did a little search on laundry soda and baking soda and their differences...thought it was interesting. http://www.diaperpin.com/clothdiapers/article_bakingsoda.asp
Thanks again!
Thanks for the link Brite. I was unable to get Washing soda at our wal-mart, so I got baking soda. I guess it's supposed to be better on the cloth diapers (I am washing them right now in my new detergent, so I will let you know). I also put a bit of Oxiclean Free in with the hot wash cycle to help with getting the poop stain out.
