I made these tonight for a cookie swap we are having at church tomorrow night and they came out great. I am all about food that taste like you spent a really long time on, that you really didn't. The recipe says that it makes 4 dozen, but mine made about 40 cookies.
1 (18.25 ounce)package of devils food cake mix
1/2 cup shortening
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon of water (I had to use 2)
1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
Combine first 4 ingredients. Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer just until smooth (I did it with the electric mixer as much as I could, then I hand mixed the rest).
Shape dough into 1 inch balls; roll in powdered sugar. Place balls 2 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheets (I have well seasoned stones that I cook on and I didn't have to grease at all).
Bake at 375 for 10 minutes (on my stones it took just a few extra minutes). Let cool on pan for 10 minutes before moving them to a cooling rack. The cookie takes on a cracked appearance during baking.
